What to Do When You Lose Heat in NY
One of the worst things that can happen during the cold winter months is losing heat in your New York home. We know that keeping your home and family safe, comfortable, and warm is one of your biggest priorities, and it’s one of ours, too. No one wants to lose heat during the coldest months of winter, and a no-heat emergency brings a ton of added stress—not to mention it could cause your plumbing to freeze, resulting in permanent damage.

1. Check your thermostat and make sure the batteries are fresh.
Double-check to make sure your thermostat is on the correct setting and that the batteries haven’t died. The thermostat function should be set to “auto” or “heat” and set to a higher temperature than inside your home.
2. Check that no breakers have been tripped and all emergency switches are on.
Sometimes electrical issues happen and breakers are tripped for safety reasons. Make sure your furnace’s or boiler’s breaker is on, and the red emergency switches are also on. These switches are most often at the top of your basement stairs or on the heating unit itself.
3. Check your tank gauge to ensure that you have fuel in your tank.
Your oil tank has a small round sight glass that houses the tank gauge. Make sure your tank is at least 1/3 of a tank full. If not, call ParkSide for a heating oil delivery, or enroll in our auto delivery service.
4. Press the RESET button only once.
On the side of your heating system is a reset button whether it’s a furnace or boiler. Press it once, and only once, to see if your heating equipment can be reset. If you press it, and it doesn’t work, call ParkSide.
